"Bau! Provençal tradition attributes the introduction of Muscat to “King René” (hence his statue on the Cours Mirabeau in Aix-en-Provence, holding a bunch of grapes). While it’s true that he appreciated it, this grape variety was actually cultivated at least a century earlier, notably in Forcalquier at the beginning of the 17th century.
 
 
“Bau” in Occitan/Provençal means rocky escarpment, referencing the type of terrain where these prized Muscat grapes are grown, forming the base of this sparkling wine.
